Google AI Mode
AI Mode is Google's dedicated, conversational AI search experience — a separate tab that returns longer, multi-step answers pulling from more sources than AI Overviews.
Why it matters: it's a distinct surface from AI Overviews, with its own citation behaviour, so it's worth tracking — and optimising for — separately.
Google AI Mode is Google’s conversational AI search — powered by Gemini 3 as of January 2026. Instead of ten blue links, it runs “query fan-out”: it breaks your question into subtopics, fires many searches at once, then synthesises a cited answer. It pulls sources far more broadly than normal search — most cited pages sit outside the top 10 — favouring authoritative, well-structured content that answers questions directly.
What is Google AI Mode?
AI Mode is a dedicated, conversational search experience where Google acts as an answer engine rather than a list of links. It runs on custom Gemini builds tuned for search-grounded retrieval; Google confirmed Gemini 3 as the active model on 22 January 2026 (Search Atlas). Responses are deeper and roughly 4× longer than an AI Overview.
How does AI Mode work? (query fan-out)
Query fan-out is the core mechanism. A single question is expanded into many sub-queries — reportedly up to 16 simultaneous searches — so Search can go deeper across the web than a single query would (Aleyda Solis). Gemini then retrieves passages, ranks the evidence, de-duplicates facts, and synthesises a cited answer, evaluating the relationships between sources rather than copying any one passage — a process we unpack in how AI engines source and cite content.
How does AI Mode pick sources?
Very differently from classic Google. Analyses put the overlap between traditional rankings and AI citations at only 25–39%, with about 68% of AI-cited pages sitting outside the top 10 organic results (Search Atlas). For its in-depth answers, AI Mode leans toward authoritative sources — academic material, reference sites — over the user-forum content AI Overviews often favour. In short: ranking well helps, but it is not the ticket it used to be.
AI Mode vs AI Overviews
AI Overviews are concise summaries inside the standard results page, next to the blue links. AI Mode is a separate, immersive conversation with no organic results shown, built for depth and follow-up questions. An Ahrefs analysis of 540,000 query pairs found their answers are semantically near-identical roughly nine times in ten, yet they cite the same URLs only 13.7% of the time (Ahrefs) — so appearing in one does not mean appearing in the other.
How to show up in AI Mode
Optimise for extractable answers. Lead with definitions, use question-and-answer structure, and cover a topic and its related questions thoroughly in one place — that gives the fan-out more reasons to retrieve you. Add structured entity markup so Gemini understands what you are, and pressure-test the page with our AI Readiness Checker. One 2026 analysis found self-contained passages of 134–167 words achieve the highest citation rates (Search Atlas). Because citations skew outside the top 10, a mid-ranking page with genuinely better, better-structured answers can win here even when it can’t win the blue links.
| AI Overviews | AI Mode | |
|---|---|---|
| Where | Top of the normal results page | Separate conversational tab |
| Depth | Concise summary | ~4× longer, in-depth |
| Sources favoured | Reddit, YouTube, mixed | Authoritative / reference |
| Overlap with top-10 organic | ~90% of AIOs cite ≥1 top-10 page (per-citation share varies 38–76% by study) | ~68% from outside top 10 |
